Rhizo
Local hypertext editor,
medium for non-linear thinking
Download for MacOS
Edit context whole,
not files apart
Context, not a single file, is unit of authoring. Triptych view opens a file flanked by backlinks and links.
Hero
Build context as your mind wanders
The working note can (1) mention [[ any_file ]], (2) invoke {{ other_note }} to mention it there, or (3) pin certain [[ links ]]* to keep them at top.
Hero
Travel the web of contexts, maximizing serendipity
(1) Meandering - shift focus along a chain of linked files and enter one context after another, down the rabbit hole.
(2) Jumping around - open a random file, jump to a distant context, salvage thoughts in the past.
Hero
Adapt your attention window for signal-to-noise ratio
(1) All-files scope provides a flat list of files with maximum skimmability leaving no files hidden in subfolders.
(2) Linked-files scope with triptych view displays linked or backlinked files aside with the current file.
(3) Focused-file scope with folded triptych view hides all except for a single file with focus.
Hero
Summon actions,
not hunting for buttons
It is keyboard-first interface. Command palette and hotkeys remove hassles of finding a button across screen.
Hero
Local folder,
a room of your own
(1) A quiet, safe place where you can cultivate private, immature thoughts and feelings.
(2) All data made by you stays with you. No remote servers, nor online databases.
(3) No proprietary file formats. Every note is stored in .txt, and other non-text references are also in open-format files.

Philosophy
For rhizomatic, non-linear, bottom-up thinking
Like primordial soup in early ocean of the Earth, it is a place for raw, atmoic thoughts and data to have reactions with each other and form emergent compounds.
Link is all you need
No folder. No hashtag. Try {{ backlink syntax }} to group or label scattered files, making an index note.
Zero formatting. Max thinking.
It's about thinking — not polishing and publishing the output. Be quick, clumsy, and messy. Like a napkin sketch.
Tiny, focused tool
It will always be small with unmistakable limits, not seeking a bloated platform with every possible features and soaring complexity.
FAQs
Who is this for?
Researcher, writer, journalist, artist or anyone who tries to build own perspective to understand the world, hard problems, or oneself.
Is it paid subscription?
No. Purchase once, own the current major version with free minor updates. Old software-in-an-box model. Plus, tiny tool doesn't expect frequent major updates.
No way to sync across devices?
You can sync if you wish. It is just a folder. Sync it with anything you like, such as iCloud.
Support any files?
Yes, as long as they are supported by MacOS. Although some might lacks thumbnail images, there is no restriction in linking them.
Why not Markdown syntax?
While versatile and expanding its uses, Markdown is basically about formatting, which we actively avoid. We only use [[wiki link]], which isn't Markdown own syntax neither.
No subfolder allowed?
Not recommended, but you can use subfolders and make link using file path as 'folder/note.txt'.
Is it anti AI?
No. We are trying to define what can and can't be delegated to AI. The recent quote 'you can outsource your thinking, but not your understanding' resonates within us nowadays.
Is it another note app, again?
Unlike others, our focus is not on knowledge management or structured writing, but on catalyzing creative thinking. Untidiness and chaos are not our enemy. Just like Albert Einstein's desk and Fyodor Dostoevsky's draft.
